TODAYS WORSHIP

A FEW THOUGHTS ON TODAYS READING...

Most of us navigate through life’s trials and for the most part we can somewhat get through what life seems to throw at us. But then we face those circumstances and trials when we’ve we run out of options. Though we don’t want them, these are the times when you either give up or completely lean on God.

Hezekiah faces a serious threat from the king of Assyria in 2 Kings 18-19. Initially, his response is to not trust in God but to buy his way out of trouble in 18:14-16. Though this temporized the situation for a season, the king of Assyria soon came back with a massive number of troops and laid siege to Jerusalem. The king sent his spokesperson who first sent his threats against Hezekiah as we read in 18:19-20, “Then the Rabshakeh said to them, “Say now to Hezekiah, ‘Thus says the great king, the king of Assyria: “What confidence is this in which you trust? You speak of having plans and power for war; but they are mere words. And in whom do you trust that you rebel against me?” He then goes on to insult the One True God. We then see what Hezekiah does in 19:14, “And Hezekiah received the letter from the hand of the messengers and read it; and Hezekiah went up to the house of the Lord, and spread it before the Lord.” Prior to this he sought the counsel of Isaiah, the prophet of God. God answered him through the prophet Isaiah, we read of the victory that would occur against Assyria at the hand of God. We read what happened in 19:35, “And it came to pass on a certain night that the angel of the Lord went out and killed in the camp of the Assyrians one hundred and eighty-five thousand; and when the people arose early in the morning, there were the corpses - all dead.”

The question is where do we turn when we are threatened or outnumbered? Where do we turn when we face the seemingly impossible situation or diagnosis? Like Hezekiah, if we want to experience true peace, (His peace) we should bring the situation to Him. We read in Philippians 4:6-7, “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” That’s the peace that I want, the “peace of God, which surpasses all understanding,”. Concerning our situations, we are told by Jesus in Matthew 7:7, “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.” These verbs are written in the Greek to be done continuously, for example, keep on asking. Whether we get the outcome we desire or not, through the process of trusting less on ourselves and more on Him, we can and will experience His peace.

THIS WEEKS MEMORY VERSE

Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life. ~John 5:24

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK

Aspire to be something more than the mass of church members. Lift up your cry to God and beseech him to fire you with a nobler ambition than that which possesses the common Christian — that you may be found faithful unto God at the last, and may win many crowns for your Lord and Master, Christ.

— C. H. Spurgeon (1834 – 1892)
