A FEW THOUGHTS ON TODAYS READING...
We all have a list of those things that we feel we need on a daily basis. For the most part we expect to breathe, eat, drink, go to the bathroom, etc. on a daily basis. There are also those things we intend to do on a daily basis, such as communicate with our spouses, etc. These are all good and necessary to be nourished and navigate life. Although most people are nourished physically, they go through life spiritually malnourished. God in His Word has also delineated things which are necessary on a daily basis. The problem is the majority of people tend to ignore God's list.
We read in Exodus 16:4-5, after the people were complaining about their lack of food, "Then the Lord said to Moses, "Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you. And the people shall go out and gather a certain quota every day, that I may test them, whether they will walk in My law or not. And it shall be on the sixth day that they shall prepare what they bring in, and it shall be twice as much as they gather daily." Notice God developed a system of eating in which they needed to depend and focus on God daily. They could not gather in one day and store it up for the week. They needed their daily Bread. We read in Deuteronomy 8:3, which Jesus quoted to Satan when challenged in the desert in Matthew 4:4, "So He humbled you, allowed you to hunger, and fed you with manna which you did not know nor did your fathers know, that He might make you know that man shall not live by bread alone; but man lives by every word that proceeds from the mouth of the Lord." God could not be any clearer, we need God and His Word daily, not weekly, monthly, or once a year at Christmas. Jesus spoke further about this manna in John 6:31-35, "Our fathers ate the manna in the desert; as it is written, 'He gave them bread from heaven to eat.'" Then Jesus said to them, "Most assuredly, I say to you, Moses did not give you the bread from heaven, but my Father gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is He who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world." Then they said to Him, "Lord, give us this bread always." And Jesus said to them, "I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst."
God through the example of the manna is showing all of us how He wants us all to live, day by day. As we say in "The Lord's Prayer" in Matthew 6:11, "Give us this day our daily bread", He wants us to keep our focus on and trust Him daily to care for us. We need Him daily and we need Him throughout our day if we are to enjoy the Spirit filled life. In Exodus 16:19-20 we read more about the manna, "And Moses said, "Let no one leave any of it till morning." Notwithstanding they did not heed Moses. But some of them left part of it until morning, and it bred worms and stank...". Likewise, when we spend time in God's Word, we are to devour it and meditate upon it and utilize it throughout the day. If not, we get stagnant and begin to stink like that unused manna. We are to engage Him daily in His Word, in prayer, etc. we are then to take this and apply it and share it with a spiritually malnourished world. If we find our walk with Christ becoming stale, if life seems meaningless and aimless, if things are not going right, return to a daily feast of His Word and become revitalized and refreshed. God's Word should be added to the list of our daily necessities. There should be no vacations from God, because time away from God, is no vacation.
