A FEW THOUGHTS ON TODAYS READING...

We live in a world without absolutes, surrounded by moral relativism. The world pushes back from a right vs wrong, black vs white mentality. Friedrich Nietzsche (1844-1900) did much to popularize this thought. He said, "You have your way, I have my way. As for the right way, it does not exist." In 2007-8 we experienced the meltdown of the American financial and banking industry. Those taught relative morality in their philosophy and business ethics courses proceeded to live out those teachings on Wall Street and the business world. They took risks, didn't represent the truth properly all to seek monetary gain. The outcome of this morally relativistic approach was the devastation of our nation's economy along with the personal outcomes of those on the receiving end of their moral relativism. Many who espouse this view publicly outcried the injustice of their actions which defies logic if you do not accept moral absolutes. If you want to see a moral relativist become a moral absolutist, just let him become the victim and they change their tune. If someone wants to state they don't believe in absolutes, just ask them if they can think of any morally relativistic situation when rape would be okay.

We read in Numbers 8:14-17, "Thus you shall separate the Levites from among the children of Israel, and the Levites shall be Mine. After that the Levites shall go in to service the tabernacle of meeting. So you shall cleanse them and offer them like a wave offering. For they are wholly given to Me from among the children of Israel; I have taken them to Myself instead of all who open the womb, the firstborn of all the children of Israel. For all the firstborn among the children of Israel are Mine, both man and beast; on the day that I struck all the firstborn in the land of Egypt I have sanctified them to Myself." God mentions 5 times that the Levites were His. They were redeemed from among all the Israelites and were His completely. We know that this was in exchange for the requirement of the firstborn to be His in Exodus 12, in response to the Levites actions in Exodus 32:25-29 at the Golden Calf incident. We, as Christians have been redeemed by the blood of Jesus. We were slaves, we were God's enemies (Romans 5:10, "For if when we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son...") and we brought nothing but a repentant heart to acquire this redemption. Jesus did it all, paid it all (Romans 3:23-24, "for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, being justified freely by His grace through that is in Christ Jesus,".). We must not forget that like the Levites, as a result of this redemption, we are now wholly His. This redemption has made us forgiven, holy, justified, free, adopted and reconciled. This means we should be continually abiding in Him, in every area of our lives. His way is the only correct way. We read in 1 Corinthians 6:20, "You've been bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God's".

Though the world looks at people as pretty good or pretty bad. In God's eyes, we are either in Christ or not in Christ, for Him or against Him, His friend or His enemy, saved or unsaved. Absolutes, not relativism. Realizing this should remind all of us to reach out to our "pretty good" family members, neighbors, friends and co-workers with the only message which can truly save them from this world and for eternity.

THIS WEEKS MEMORY VERSE

The Lord bless you and keep you; The Lord make His face shine upon you, And be gracious to you; The Lord lift up His countenance upon you, And give you peace. ~Numbers 6:24-26
