Do troubles and trials push you toward God – or away? Today, look back over your week. How is your spiritual health? Has it been a week with any trials, troubles, and struggles? Did pressures increase at work, at home, in your health, or finances? And then what happens inside of you? Did you cry out to the Lord, fall upon His grace, turn from any wicked way? Or did you seethe in anger, wallow in self-pity, or worst of all harden your heart to spiritual things? The test of pruning (which is affirmative) and chastening (which is disciplinary) is in our response. That is one of the simplest ways to test what is going on in your life. Pruning always draws us closer, chastening initially can push us away. TEST #1: When troubles came this week, did you remain joyful, did you read God's Word with hunger, and talked to Him often in prayer? A fruitful believer that is experiencing the nearness of their Heavenly Father pruning rises to God’s challenge. We move toward the Lord. TEST #2: Or when troubles came this week, did joylessness fill your heart, mind, and life? Did your relationship with the Lord, seem blighted by sadness or lethargy? Did the Word of God seem unimportant, boring, and dull? We often initially move away or grow cold toward the Lord. OUR FATHER WANTS THE BEST FOR US With His heart full of love and mercy, OUR Father the Vinedresser is trying to bring into our lives this morning, the greatest possible blessing. Listen to these words from a paragraph entitled “Obedience” from Chastening, a booklet by James H. McConkey. God comes to us in the positive discipline of pruning, or in the negative discipline of chastening. How does He do that? It may be through the suffering of your seeing carefully made plans replaced by keen disappointment. It may be through the suffering of bereavements that tear from your presence – precious loved ones. It may be through the suffering of temporal losses and broken fortunes. It may be through the suffering that stalks into your life through the willfulness and sin of others. It may be through the suffering that sometimes seems to bring you to the brink of broken faith and a broken heart. It may be that out of your very agony of heart and soul the eternal God of love and mercy is seeking to bring into your life the greatest blessing that can enrich and glorify that life – the blessing of your human will be yielded to the will of God. And to be yielded to the will of God means more than silver and gold, more than gratified desires and ambitions, more than the pleasures of friendship, more than all the praises of men, more than all the prizes of fame, and more than the attainment of all your highest earthly aims and strivings. This is the richest and deepest of all blessings – to be swallowed up in the will of God. Any Believer Can Get Snared by Satan. Who can get snared? Back up to 1 Timothy 6:9 and see Paul’s earlier warning: 1 Timothy 6:9 (NKJV) But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and harmful lusts which drown men in destruction and perdition. 10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. Satan traps believers into wasting their lives chasing after riches. These believers think they can handle all the lusts that are fed by riches. But they can’t. They are just self-inflicting terrible spiritual wounds upon their souls. As they weaken and get sick spiritually, they slowly drift away from the food and health for their souls that flows from the Word. They also get distanced from encouraging Biblical nurture that flows from the gathering of the Body of Christ at His Church. Over time they become pierced, wounded, crippled, sorrow-filled and unable to serve the Lord because of this self-directed, self-damaging pathway they have chosen for themselves and their families. Even Mature Believers are Warned Satan is so strong that even godly, mature believers can get snared if they are not vigilant. Turn back to 1 Timothy 3:7 and not this warning, right in the middle of the qualifications for the leaders of Christ’s Church: 1 Timothy 3:7 (NKJV) Moreover he must have a good testimony among those who are outside, lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil. Today, and every day of our lives, the Cross of Christ is the source of our power to live in this world of sin. Living a life that glorifies God is called sanctified living. Sanctification means that God is leading and controlling our lives. As we return to Christ’s Last Words to His Church, we find that His Church at: Laodicea was not Living in Shadow of Christ’s Cross For two generations, all the local churches around Laodicea had savored the truths about the Cross of Christ. Today, as we gather as Christ’s Church, we gather to hear again for our generation, His warning to: Never stop living in the shadow of the Cross. Perhaps the two best descriptions of what we have in Christ are in the epistle or letter to the church scattered through the area of the neighbors of Laodicea. They were the Galatians. Look with me at the best-known verse on the cross in Galatian 2:20, where Paul shares his own personal salvation testimony: Galatians 2:20 (NKJV) I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me. Galatians 2:20 is our purpose statement for Living Salvation begins and ends at the Cross. Jesus Christ on the Cross was both the Author and Finisher of our faith. Life for the believer is always lived in the shadow of Christ’s Cross. To the degree that is understood, is to the degree that our lives are lived pleasing to God and fruitful for His purposes. That is the essence of Galatians 2:20. But the “How to” portion is declared a few chapters later in the same book. Turn onward with me to Galatians 6. Paul has explained, in chapters 3-5: the Spirit-led, Spirit-filled, Spirit-fruited, Spirit-liberated life of salvation we all in Christ, have been given.
